Questions about digestive symptoms.

Digestive symptoms share a long list of possible causes, and sorting them out is a physician's job. Here is how that process usually works, and the one thing an exam here can rule in or out.

The short version

  • Digestive symptoms are diagnosed and treated by a physician, often a gastroenterologist.
  • Bloating, reflux, cramping, and irregular bowel habits share a long list of possible causes.
  • Mid back and rib joint pain can sometimes feel like it is coming from the stomach.
  • We do not run gut panels, diagnose digestive conditions, or build elimination diets.
  • An exam here can tell you whether pain is mechanical. Everything else belongs with your doctor.

What patients describe.

Bloating after meals, heartburn or reflux, cramping, bowels that swing between loose and stuck, feeling full quickly, and nausea that comes and goes are some of the most common complaints. Each one can come from something minor and temporary, or from a condition that needs proper testing, which is exactly why guessing at a cause rarely helps anyone.

What commonly causes these symptoms.

Reflux and heartburn often trace back to how the valve at the top of the stomach is working. Bloating and irregular bowel habits show up with irritable bowel syndrome, food intolerances such as lactose or fructose, bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, and with inflammatory bowel disease in some cases. Ulcers, gallbladder disease, and celiac disease are also on the list a physician works through. Stress and disrupted sleep tend to make almost all of these symptoms worse, even when they are not the original cause.

Signs that help a doctor narrow it down.

How long symptoms have lasted, whether they follow certain foods, whether they wake you at night, and whether they come with weight loss, blood in the stool, or fever all matter to a physician working through the possibilities. Symptoms that started suddenly in adulthood, or that keep changing in pattern, are worth mentioning specifically at your visit.

What a doctor typically checks.

A physician usually starts with a detailed history and exam, then may order blood work, stool testing, or imaging depending on what the history suggests. Persistent or unclear symptoms are often referred to a gastroenterologist, who can perform endoscopy or colonoscopy when it is warranted. That level of testing is well outside what a chiropractic exam can offer, and we will tell you that directly.

What we look at when someone raises it.

One narrow thing: whether pain you are calling stomach pain is actually coming from your back. Mid back and rib joint problems can cause pain that wraps around the trunk and gets mistaken for something internal, and an exam can often tell the difference. That works in both directions, which is why anything that does not behave like a mechanical problem gets pointed toward medical evaluation instead of worked on here.

When to see your doctor

Go to your doctor promptly for any of these:

  • Blood in your stool, black stools, or vomiting blood
  • Trouble or pain swallowing
  • Unplanned weight loss, or ongoing vomiting
  • Severe or worsening belly pain, or a fever with belly pain
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • A change in your bowel habits that lasts more than a couple of weeks

Belly pain with chest pain, sweating, or shortness of breath needs emergency care.

Where a chiropractic exam fits.

Boss Chiropractic is a chiropractic office. We examine and treat mechanical problems in the spine and rib joints, which is the piece that can sometimes be mistaken for digestive pain. Chiropractic care does not fix digestion, and we will not suggest that it does. What an exam here can tell you is whether part of what you are feeling is mechanical. Everything else belongs with your physician.
