Holistic healthQuestions about weight loss.
Weight loss can be a goal or a warning sign, and the difference matters. Here is how doctors sort that out, and the one narrow piece of it a chiropractic exam can honestly look at.
The short version
- Weight loss can be planned or unplanned, and a doctor reads those two very differently.
- Losing weight without trying is one of the more useful warning signs in medicine.
- Common causes include diet and activity changes, thyroid problems, diabetes, digestive disease, and mood.
- A physician sorts out the cause with a history, an exam, and blood work.
- This office examines mechanical joint pain. The cause of the weight change itself is a physician's question.
What the term actually covers.
Weight loss just describes a change on the scale. The reason behind it is what matters. Someone who is eating less and moving more on purpose is in a different situation than someone whose weight is dropping with no change in habits at all. Doctors treat those two cases very differently, and the second one gets more attention.
Unintentional weight loss usually means a drop of around five percent of your body weight or more over six to twelve months, without dieting or a new exercise routine. For someone who weighs 160 pounds, that works out to roughly eight pounds. That number is a rough marker, not a hard line, and every person's baseline is different, but it is close to what doctors use to decide whether to look further.
What commonly causes it.
An overactive thyroid can speed up metabolism enough to cause steady weight loss along with a fast heartbeat, heat intolerance, or shaky hands. Diabetes, especially when blood sugar has been running high for a while, can also cause weight to drop even when appetite is normal or increased. Digestive conditions that affect how food is absorbed, ongoing infections, and depression or anxiety can all show up as weight loss too. Certain medications carry it as a side effect, and less often, more serious illness does as well. That range of possibilities is exactly why a real evaluation matters more than a guess.
Signs that usually travel with it.
Unplanned weight loss rarely shows up alone. Fatigue, a change in appetite, fever, night sweats, a cough that will not clear, a change in bowel habits, or a general sense that something is off tend to appear around the same time. The combination tells a doctor more than the weight change by itself, which is part of why it helps to write down anything else that has changed before your visit.
What a doctor typically checks.
A physician usually starts with your history: when the weight loss started, how much, and what else changed around the same time. From there, a physical exam and blood work, often including thyroid tests, blood sugar, and a complete blood count, narrow down the possibilities. Depending on what turns up, the next step may be imaging or a referral to a specialist. None of that happens in a chiropractic office, and it should not.
What you can reasonably do next.
Write down when you first noticed the change, roughly how much weight is involved, and anything else that feels different, including appetite, energy, sleep, and mood. Bring your current medication list to the appointment. If you do not have a primary care physician, that is the first call worth making.
See your doctor for weight loss you did not plan, and go promptly if it comes with fever, night sweats, a lasting cough, blood in your stool, trouble swallowing, ongoing belly pain, or heavy fatigue. Talk to your doctor or a mental health professional if food and weight have become hard to think about, or if you are eating in ways that worry you.
Where a chiropractic exam fits.
Boss Chiropractic is a chiropractic office. We examine and treat mechanical problems in the spine and joints, meaning pain that comes from how a joint is moving. If a change in your weight is changing how much a knee, hip, or low back hurts when you walk, that mechanical piece is something we can look at directly and tell you honestly what we find. Why your weight is changing is a different question, and it belongs with your physician.
